Initially, Riot Games planned to launch League of Legends with merely 20 champions, but by the time of its release on October 27, 2009, that number had expanded to 40. Fast forward 15 years, and the game now boasts an impressive lineup of 171 champions.
The latest addition to the League roster is Yunara, a marksman who honed her skills in the spirit realm over centuries, introduced in mid-2025. Before her, Mel Medarda, a councilor and sorceress from Piltover in Arcane, joined the game.
Mel Medarda followed Ambessa, the Matriarch of War (champ 169), and Aurora, the Witch Between Worlds (champ 168), who were released in November 2024 and July 2024, respectively.
Reflecting on my early experiences with League in its first season, I never envisioned the champion count surpassing 100, let alone reaching 171 (I was a devoted Poppy player, by the way). This growth underscores the game’s lasting appeal, as it continues to thrive with millions of active players every month, despite various challenges over the years.
