Riot Games initially planned to launch League of Legends featuring only 20 distinct champions, but this count ultimately rose to 40 by the release date on October 27, 2009. Fast forward 15 years, and the game now boasts an impressive roster of 171 playable characters.
The latest addition to the League lineup is Yunara, a marksman who mastered her skills during centuries spent in the spirit realm, and she was introduced in mid-2025. Before her, Mel Medarda, a council member and mage from Arcane, made her first appearance.
Mel Medarda was introduced after Ambessa, the Matriarch of War (champion 169), and Aurora, the Witch Between Worlds (champion 168), unveiled in November 2024 and July 2024 respectively.
Reflecting on my early days with League during season one, I never dreamed that the champion count would swell to 100, let alone 171. This evolution highlights the game’s endurance over the years. Despite facing various challenges, it remains extremely popular, attracting millions of players monthly.
