Helldivers 2: A Guide to Enhancing Your Weapons

The eagerly anticipated weapon upgrade feature has returned to Helldivers 2, addressing a top request from the game’s community. While the original Helldivers included a weapon customization system, the sequel shipped without this option, prompting many players to question when they could once again optimize their weapons.

Fortunately, Patch 1.003.000 has reinstated weapon customization, enhancing the gameplay experience. If you’re ready to enhance your weapon handling by unlocking attachments, now is the perfect moment to re-engage with the Galactic War. Here’s what you need to know about upgrading weapons in Helldivers 2.

How to Upgrade Weapons in Helldivers 2

The new weapon upgrade system introduces an exciting level of customization in Helldivers 2. Each primary weapon can be leveled up to a maximum of 25, allowing players to unlock various attachments and skins at different tiers.

While some patterns are only cosmetic, attachments can significantly enhance weapon performance. Several previously underperforming or niche weapons can now be upgraded into reliable choices due to this new system. With the right attachments, your less favored weapons might turn into your new go-tos.

The upgrading and customization options are currently limited to primary weapons in Helldivers 2. We hope future updates will extend this capability to support and secondary weapons as well.

Step #1

Begin by selecting a primary weapon from the armory to add to your loadout. You’ll notice a new «Customize» button next to the «Equip» option. Click this to view available attachments and skins, as well as the weapon XP required to unlock upgrades. This menu provides a clear view of your weapon’s progress.

The weapon upgrade feature becomes available once you reach level 10 in Helldivers 2.

Step #2

Next, engage in missions to level up your primary weapon. Tackling more challenging missions will yield a greater amount of weapon XP.

You do not need to use your primary weapons directly to gain XP; simply equipping them in your loadout will suffice. This allows you to use support weapons while your primary weapon levels up in the background.

Step #3

After accumulating enough XP, return to the weapon customization menu to unlock and attach upgrades using Requisition Slips. You won’t lose your Samples unless you’re applying them toward unlocking ship modules, which provide additional buffs and benefits for your primary weapons.

Be sure to utilize the spray pattern simulator before selecting any attachment. This tool visualizes how weapons handle recoil, helping you to make the best choices for upgrades in Helldivers 2.

List of Unlockable Weapon Attachments and Patterns

At present, Helldivers 2 offers 28 weapon attachments and 11 weapon patterns to unlock. It’s important to note that attachments differ by weapon type.

For instance, shotguns can utilize specific muzzles to manage pellet spread, which would not be applicable to assault rifles. Each weapon category features dedicated upgrade options tailored to its intended function and gameplay style.

Weapon Upgrade Tips in Helldivers 2

Understanding the most effective methods for upgrading your weapons maximizes your efforts and speeds up attachment unlocks, which is especially important for newcomers to Helldivers 2.

  • Conserve your Requisition Slips by focusing on attachments that enhance weapon performance. If you’re not aiming for completionism, it’s unwise to invest in attachments that worsen recoil.
  • You can notably boost weapon performance by choosing the «No Underbarrel» option, which eliminates the flashlight and enhances ergonomics to minimize weapon sway.
  • While most weapon stats are straightforward, ergonomics requires special attention. A higher ergonomics rating means your weapon will return to the center of the screen more quickly, improving responsiveness–crucial during battles against numerous foes where quick target switching is necessary.
  • Different weapons come with varying types and numbers of attachments. For instance, the Exploding Crossbow has limited unlockable optics. Given that its default scope is already effective, it may be wiser to focus on upgrading other weapons.
