Fans of The Elder Scrolls will have to wait a little longer. Jason Schreier, Bloomberg journalist and one of the gaming industry’s most reliable insiders, has revealed that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still a long way from release and is not expected to arrive anytime soon.

During a recent Bloomberg Q&A session, Schreier stated that the highly anticipated RPG is still at least two to three years away from launch. If his estimate proves accurate, the game is unlikely to release before 2028, with 2029 also remaining a realistic possibility.

Should that timeline hold, nearly two decades will have passed between the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in 2011 and the next mainline installment. It would also mean roughly 12 years between the game’s first teaser, shown at E3 2018, and its eventual launch.

Bethesda Is Fully Focused on The Elder Scrolls 6

Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard previously confirmed that the vast majority of the studio’s developers are now working on The Elder Scrolls 6, making it the company’s primary project. However, Bethesda has yet to reveal an official release date or showcase new gameplay footage.

Schreier’s comments also align with previous reports from Windows Central journalist Jez Corden, who earlier suggested that the game was targeting a 2028–2029 release window.

Xbox Layoffs Could Impact Development

The latest update comes amid Microsoft’s major restructuring of its gaming division. Recent layoffs across Xbox and ZeniMax Media have also affected Bethesda. Despite the cuts, Microsoft continues to prioritize its biggest franchises, including The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, DOOM, Quake, and Wolfenstein.

At this point, there is no confirmation that the workforce reductions have directly affected The Elder Scrolls 6’s development schedule. According to Schreier, development is progressing, but players should not expect the game to launch within the next couple of years.
