The Alters: Discovering Uncommon Hued Rocks for Miners

This guide contains late-game spoilers for The Alters.

The Alters features numerous optional quests linked to Jan Dolski’s various alternate selves. Throughout the game, each Alter will present players with requests, leaving it up to players to determine if fulfilling these requests is worthwhile. However, for those aiming to cultivate a dependable, efficient, and content crew, meeting these personal requests is generally advantageous.

One of Jan Miner’s character-specific tasks becomes accessible in Act 3, provided he was created by players and remains at the base instead of departing with Jan Technician. This request, titled The Wood and the Sculptor task, entails Miner asking Jan Dolski to locate a uniquely colored rock on the planet’s surface. For players having difficulty, this guide highlights where to find this item.

How to Unlock The Wood and the Sculptor Task in The Alters

If Jan Miner is created during The Alters and players dedicate time to addressing his mental challenges, such as helping him regrow his arm and enabling him to recover in the Contemplation Room, his request will become available. Miner will approach the player at the start of Act 3 with his final personal request, indicating his desire to engage in a fulfilling hobby.

Miner recalls that Jan Dolski excelled in wood carving during their school days and expresses a yearning to try that activity once more. For this, he will need a chisel and an unusually colored rock that can be found around the planet. Players who agree to help will receive a new optional task named The Wood and the Sculptor.

Where to Find Unusually Colored Rocks in The Alters

Creating a chisel at the Workshop is straightforward and only requires 5 metals and 6 hours to craft. Finding the colored rock, however, entails knowing what to search for. Unusually colored rocks are relatively common in Act 3, so they should be easy to locate. Players should look for uniquely shaped and colored objects resembling pink crystals embedded in a rock that resembles a tree stump. One of the nearest locations for such a rock is straight ahead from the entrance of the base, as depicted in the accompanying map image.

Only one unusually colored rock is required for Miner’s request, so any additional locations become irrelevant after one is obtained.

Additionally, during exploration, players may encounter various colored rock spots naturally. For instance, one spot is right near the entrance to the rebels’ shelter in Act 3, and another can be found slightly beyond a small bridge near the sole Rapidium mining site on the map.

While on the lookout for the colored rock, remain aware of the vicinity, as numerous moving anomalies can appear near these locations and might surprise players as they investigate.

How to Complete The Wood and the Sculptor Task in The Alters

After obtaining the uniquely colored rock and crafting the chisel in The Alters, it’s time to return to Jan Miner with this good news. He will be delighted to learn that Jan Dolski has gathered the necessary materials for his hobby. As his spirits lift, The Wood and the Sculptor task will conclude. Shortly afterward, during the Alters’ leisure time, players will receive a notification about Miner working on a rock carving and can visit him to check on his progress.
