Marvel Studios has officially confirmed one of the most anticipated castings in recent years, announcing that Ryan Gosling will headline a standalone Ghost Rider film set for release in 2028. The reveal came during the studio’s Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where Marvel unveiled several major additions to its upcoming slate.
The project will be directed by Shawn Levy, marking another collaboration between the filmmaker and Gosling following their work on Star Wars: Starfighter. The announcement also ends years of speculation linking the Oscar-nominated actor with a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel has yet to reveal story details, supporting cast, or which incarnation of Ghost Rider Gosling will portray. While Johnny Blaze remains the leading expectation among fans, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige declined to confirm the character’s identity after the panel.
The film will mark Gosling’s MCU debut and Levy’s second Marvel feature after directing Deadpool & Wolverine. Screenwriter Jonathan Tropper, who also collaborated with Levy on Star Wars: Starfighter, is attached to the project.
Ghost Rider previously appeared on the big screen in Sony’s 2007 and 2011 films starring Nicolas Cage, but those movies existed outside the continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The upcoming feature will introduce the supernatural antihero into the MCU for the first time.
Although Marvel has only confirmed a 2028 release window, the Ghost Rider announcement was one of several headline reveals at Comic-Con. The studio also showcased Black Panther 3 and new footage from Avengers: Doomsday, outlining the next phase of its cinematic roadmap.
