Stardew Valley: A Guide to Catching All Fish

A significant milestone in achieving perfection in Stardew Valley involves collecting all the types of fish. Once you manage to catch every species, Willy will reward you with a stardrop in the mail the following day. Additionally, completing the fish collection contributes to Qi’s Perfection Tracker and grants you the Master Angler achievement.

Nonetheless, certain fishes in Stardew Valley prove to be more elusive than others, often residing in rare environments. Continue reading to discover where and when you can find all 67 fish species and other valuable aquatic life in the game.

Updated May 1, 2025, by Artur Novichenko: Fishing in Stardew Valley is just as challenging as farming. With a wide array of tools at your disposal, you’ll have the means to catch even the rarest species. This guide has been updated to include the necessary equipment as well as what you might find in the Golden Treasure Chest.

Comprehensive Fish List

The fish index in the game displays silhouettes for each species you haven’t yet caught, but it doesn’t reveal their names or locations. Below is a comprehensive list naming each fish and detailing where to find them.

Fishing Tools in Stardew Valley

Before you can begin fishing in Stardew Valley, it’s important to gather the right gear. Players can utilize various Fishing Rods along with Crab Pots.

  • Training Rod
  • Bamboo Pole
  • Fiberglass Rod
  • Iridium Rod
  • Advanced Iridium Rod

While it’s possible to fish without bait, using it accelerates the process and can help catch specific types of fish, even though some baits can be costly. Furthermore, all rods except for the Bamboo Pole and Training Rod require bait to be effective.

Bait Type

Description

Bait

Increases the speed at which fish bite while reducing the chance of catching trash.

Wild Bait

Offers a chance to capture two fish of the same type simultaneously.

Magnet

Enhances your chances of finding treasure while fishing.

Magic Bait

Allows you to catch fish irrespective of the current weather, time, or body of water.

Deluxe Bait

Increases the fishing bar size, leading to faster bites compared to regular Bait.

Challenge Bait

Every perfect catch yields three times more fish, but a missed catch shrinks the fishing bar.

Targeted Bait

Heightens the likelihood of catching a particular fish.

Types of Tackle

Additionally, rods such as the Iridium Rod and Advanced Iridium Rod feature slots for tackle. A Sonar Bobber is especially beneficial as it allows players to identify the type of fish before reeling it in, which is crucial when targeting Legendary fish.

  • Sonar Bobber – Displays the type of caught fish before landing it.
  • Trap Bobber – Slows down the fish’s escape rate.
  • Quality Bobber – Increases caught fish’s quality by one level.
  • Lead Bobber – Prevents the fishing bar from bouncing.
  • Cork Bobber – Slightly enlarges the fishing bar.
  • Spinner – Causes fish to bite a bit faster.
  • Dressed Spinner – Substantially speeds up fish bites.
  • Curiosity Lure – Boosts the chances of catching rare fish.
  • Barbed Hook – Ensures the fishing bar closely follows the fish.
  • Treasure Hunter – Prevents fish from escaping when a treasure chest is hooked, and slightly increases the chance of finding one.

Fish in Rivers and Lakes

Multiple freshwater fishing locations exist throughout the game map, including a considerable pond and river in Cindersap Forest, as well as a lake situated in the Mountain area. Fishing spots can also be found across various farm types; however, the standard farm typically contains only trash in its ponds.

While the Community Center features distinct bundles for lake and river fish, the lists overlap. As such, expect to find numerous fish appearing multiple times in the tables below.
