Riot Games revives Go4LoL alongside League of Legends Classic

Riot Games has announced the return of Go4LoL, one of the earliest competitive tournament circuits in League of Legends history. The revived series will launch alongside League of Legends Classic, with the first event scheduled for August 1.

The tournament marks part of Riot’s effort to recreate the early competitive atmosphere that helped shape League of Legends esports before the introduction of regional franchise leagues.

A key stepping stone before the LCS era

Before the League Championship Series debuted in 2013, Go4LoL, operated by ESL in partnership with Riot Games, served as one of Europe’s primary open tournament ecosystems.

Weekly competitions gave amateur and semi-professional teams a chance to compete for Riot Points, cash prizes and exposure to established esports organisations. For many aspiring professionals, Go4LoL represented the first realistic path toward a competitive career.

Its return reflects Riot’s attempt to recreate not only the gameplay of early League of Legends but also the grassroots competitive environment that surrounded it.

Tournament format

Riot has confirmed four open qualifiers throughout August.

Each tournament will be completed in a single day using a single-elimination bracket, with the top two teams from every qualifier advancing to the August 29 finals.

Registration is completely open, with no ranking requirements or participant limits announced.

For now, the series will be available exclusively on the North American server, and Riot has not revealed whether additional regions will receive their own Go4LoL competitions.

More than a nostalgia event

The revival of Go4LoL represents more than a nostalgic callback. It also reintroduces an open competitive pathway that largely disappeared as League of Legends shifted toward regional professional leagues and long-term partnered ecosystems.

Whether Go4LoL becomes a permanent feature of League of Legends Classic remains unclear. Riot says the future of the series will depend on player interest and the reception of the Classic mode after launch.
