The Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) has launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at bringing structure and accountability to an often-overlooked area of competitive gaming.
Dubbed the Certified Talent Agent Scheme, this program officially recognizes individuals and agencies representing professional esports players, providing them with a trusted approval. Its aim is to safeguard players from unethical representation and guarantee that their business dealings are conducted fairly and transparently.
For an extended period, the esports industry has functioned with minimal oversight regarding player agents. Many professionals, particularly younger entrants, have struggled to navigate complex contracts and negotiations without adequate guidance.
The new certification introduced by ESIC serves as a professional benchmark: agents who successfully complete the program are acknowledged for adhering to ethical practices and maintaining high industry standards. This offers players a reliable method to identify trustworthy representation as they build their careers.
The first two agencies to achieve official certification are Sports Entertainment Group (SEG) and Prodigy Agency. Rowan Stroo from SEG emphasized the necessity of this initiative, noting that regulatory frameworks in gaming are lacking in various aspects, including talent management. Similarly, Jerome Coupez from Prodigy Agency highlighted that the lack of oversight has exposed players to avoidable risks, underscoring the importance of ESIC’s initiative for player protection.
Stephen Hanna, CEO of ESIC, characterized the program as a significant advancement toward the professionalization of esports talent representation. He pointed out that establishing a pathway for agent accreditation addresses a long-standing gap in the industry.
While engaging with certified agents is not compulsory, players and teams now have access to a verified roster of professionals who meet established standards. Nevertheless, ESIC advises players to conduct thorough research before selecting representation.
This initiative builds upon ESIC’s continuous efforts since 2020 to introduce ethical standards for talent agents. The official rollout marks a pivotal moment for professionalism in esports, aiming to ensure that the business side of gaming evolves alongside the rapid growth of the competitive scene. By incorporating certified agents, ESIC is promoting a safer and more transparent environment for players across the global esports ecosystem.
