One of the most significant updates introduced in the Destiny 2 expansion titled The Edge of Fate is the addition of loot tiers. Gear, including weapons and armor, is categorized into five tiers, with the higher tiers offering enhanced stats and unique visual designs for Tier 5.

Much like the previous Adept weapons and Artifice armor, achieving Tier 5 represents the pinnacle of this new loot system. However, unlike the relatively straightforward process for obtaining Adepts and Artifice gear, acquiring Tier 5 equipment requires a considerable investment of time and effort.

How to Acquire Higher-Tier Gear in Destiny 2

Obtaining higher-tier gear in Destiny 2 is closely linked to the Power progression system. The higher your Power level, the better the loot you can expect. Drops for Tier 4 and Tier 5 gear typically become available around a Power score of 400, which requires significant effort to reach.

The primary method to secure Tier 5 gear will likely be through the Ultimate difficulty available in the Portal at a Power level of 500. This Ultimate difficulty, along with the increase in Power cap, will be introduced with the Ash & Iron update on September 9. There are several other methods to earn higher-tier drops, including Tier 5 gear.

Participate in Activities in the Portal

Keep an eye out for Bonus Drops while in the Portal.

As you enhance your Power level, the loot contained in the Portal’s reward packages improves as well. Simply engage in activities that have sufficient modifiers to elevate you to an A rank reward package, and you’ll gradually start to receive higher-tier gear. Activities such as Caldera and K1 Logistics Solo Ops are some of the fastest for this grind, but feel free to choose any activity you enjoy.

While undertaking these activities, you might also come across Prime engrams, which are rarer drops featuring higher tiers and Power than standard loot.

Boost Your Guardian Rank

Focusing on Guardian Rank goals offers key benefits.

In The Edge of Fate, Guardian Ranks have undergone a revision and now play a crucial role in determining the quality of random drops from Portal activities. Although the specific thresholds for improved drops based on Guardian Rank remain unclear, Bungie has confirmed that mid-activity rewards are influenced by your Guardian Rank and seasonal Power level.

Additionally, the objectives associated with Guardian Rank have been updated. There’s no longer a requirement to complete solo dungeons or master-level raids to achieve the highest rank; instead, the focus is on increasing Power, engaging in Portal activities with certain modifiers, and progressing through the season.

Complete Conquests

Conquests have replaced Grandmaster Nightfalls in this expansion.

Conquests have taken the place of Grandmaster Nightfalls in The Edge of Fate. While players can still partake in Grandmaster difficulty in the Portal, the only way to progress towards the Conqueror title is through these Conquests. Currently, six Conquests are available across three levels of difficulty (Expert, Master, and Grandmaster), which can be located in the Seasonal Hub.

Based on the difficulty, completing Conquests can reward you with Tier 3, Tier 4, or Tier 5 loot. However, a significant limitation is that Conquests can only be completed once per season, unlike Grandmaster Nightfalls which could be farmed repeatedly.

Finish Weekly Campaign Missions

Two drops are available each week.

Each week, players are able to finish two campaign missions from The Edge of Fate on either Fabled or Mythic difficulty to earn bonus loot. Successfully completing each mission for the first time during the week awards a Tier 3 drop on Fabled difficulty and a Tier 4 drop on Mythic.

Purchase Upgrades on Kepler

At the Altar of Relativity, players can purchase upgrades that enhance destination loot. Reaching 350 Power unlocks the first Kepler Tier Upgrade: +1, while 450 Power grants access to the Kepler Tier Upgrade: +2. These enhancements raise the tier levels of all rewards from Kepler, allowing for higher-tier loot from Kepler activities, including weekly missions and The Sieve.
