Sportradar Under Investigation by UK CMA Regarding IMG Arena Agreement

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) of the United Kingdom has initiated an initial assessment regarding Sportradar’s intention to acquire IMG Arena from Endeavor Group for $225 million (€193 million). The regulator’s concerns center on the potential negative impact this transaction could have on competition within the sports betting data and media rights industries.

Sportradar, which holds partnerships with a variety of global sports and esports organizations, revealed the acquisition plan in March 2024, with the goal of incorporating IMG Arena’s extensive range of data services and media rights. However, the CMA is worried that merging two key players in this market might stifle competition in the U.K., thereby affecting pricing, innovation in services, and access for smaller companies.

If the acquisition goes through, Sportradar would gain IMG Arena’s rights to around 70 international betting properties, which encompass 39,000 official data events and 30,000 live-streamed events each year. This portfolio includes prestigious tournaments like Wimbledon, the US Open, and the PGA Tour.

Sportradar’s CEO, Carsten Koerl, highlighted the strategic advantages of this acquisition, stating it would enable the company to «unlock the full economic potential» of the IMG Arena assets.

The financial arrangement of the deal consists of $125 million being paid by Endeavor to Sportradar, alongside $100 million that Endeavor will repay to IMG Arena’s rights holders. Additionally, Sportradar will take on the operational expenses for this unit.

CMA Expresses Concerns Over Market Dominance from Sportradar’s IMG Acquisition

The CMA is currently assessing the situation.

The CMA is now actively seeking feedback from relevant industry participants to determine if the merger constitutes what it terms a «relevant merger situation» that could significantly reduce competition in the U.K.

The regulator indicated, «The CMA is evaluating whether the proposed transaction may lead to a scenario classified as a relevant merger situation under the merger regulations outlined in the Enterprise Act 2002.»

This request for feedback marks the beginning of the CMA’s data collection process. It has invited contributions regarding the transaction from any interested parties.

This investigation comes amid rising concerns about consolidation within the sports data and betting technology sectors. Sportradar already boasts significant partnerships with major sports leagues, including the NBA and MLB, as well as esports giant Riot Games. The addition of IMG Arena could enhance its influence in both the U.K. and global markets.

The CMA opened its invitation for comments on July 11, with the deadline for submissions set for July 25. Following this period, the authority will decide whether to move forward with a formal Phase 1 investigation. The outcome of this inquiry could have broader consequences for future mergers and acquisitions in the sports and esports betting landscape, especially concerning regulatory views on data market concentration.
