The indie MMORPG, Book of Travels, is set to go offline permanently, but fans of the game will still have a chance to explore its world thanks to a new direction taken by the developers. While this may not completely ease the disappointment for many, it stands as a more favorable outcome compared to the fate of many other contemporary online titles.
Originally launched as an early access game in late 2021, Book of Travels distinguished itself from traditional MMORPGs by forgoing conventional narratives and missions. Instead, players were encouraged to create their own adventures, navigating a world that lacked a definitive start or finish. This unique approach extended to player interaction, where communication was limited to emotes and gestures, setting it apart from typical multiplayer experiences. However, its innovative design ultimately fell short in achieving lasting success.
In a recent announcement, the development team revealed that Book of Travels would be officially shutting down its online servers on July 31. They acknowledged their delayed communication with the community and recognized that the project’s scope was overwhelming for their small team. Despite their continuous efforts to improve the game, they concluded that the fundamental issues plaguing it were unsustainable. Consequently, after a year’s worth of deliberation, they decided to take the game offline entirely, transforming it into a single-player experience.
From this point onward, players who own Book of Travels or decide to purchase it can enjoy the game in offline mode. The developers have made adjustments to rebalance gameplay to better cater to solo players, and they have opened the title to mods, inviting the community to contribute to its ongoing evolution. Support will continue through a dedicated modding channel on the game’s official Discord. Players have until July 31 to download their characters from the servers, who can then be imported for offline play. Additionally, the game’s price has been significantly lowered from $29.99 to just $4.99.
Reactions from the gaming community have been mixed. Many players have expressed sadness over the MMORPG’s transition to offline play, with some noting that the lack of recent updates and communication suggested an impending shutdown. Nonetheless, others have praised the developers’ innovative approach to keep the game accessible, contrasting with the fate of numerous recent titles that have disappeared completely upon server closure. The ongoing debate over the preservation of digital games has even reached the European Parliament, highlighting the importance of making previously purchased titles available post-shutdown.
As Book of Travels embarks on this new journey, the decision to maintain access to its captivating world provides a glimmer of hope for gamers familiar with the title, showcasing an admirable initiative within the gaming industry.
