Discover Teammates: Ubisoft’s Bold Leap into AI-Driven Player-NPC Connections

Ubisoft is stepping into a new frontier of gaming with its latest project, Teammates, which aims to revolutionize how players engage in multiplayer scenarios. This innovative playable experience harnesses the power of generative AI to create an interactive environment where players can team up with AI companions rather than relying on real-life partners.

In a recent press release, Ubisoft unveiled the vision behind Teammates, showcasing its potential to redefine multiplayer dynamics. Imagine diving into an AI-driven first-person shooter without the need to coordinate with other players or deal with unpredictable behaviors common in traditional gaming scenarios. This concept could be especially appealing to those who favor a single-player experience but still enjoy the thrill of multiplayer action.

Building upon the groundwork established by Ubisoft’s earlier NEO NPCs initiative, which was introduced at GDC 2024, Teammates brings generative AI systems into a fully realized gaming context. At the heart of the game lies a classic first-person shooter premise: players step into a dystopian future as resistance fighters on a quest to locate five missing squad members while navigating enemy territory.

The current playable segment allows players to unearth these squad members’ final moments as they engage in combat with hostile forces. Accompanying them on this journey are several AI allies–Jaspar, a voice assistant capable of conversation; and Pablo and Sofia, two NPC companions equipped with advanced AI capabilities that enable them to support the player dynamically.

A standout feature of Teammates is its voice command system, which lets players communicate with their AI allies in a natural, conversational manner. With Ubisoft’s internally developed AI technology, Jaspar, Pablo, and Sofia can respond effectively to spoken instructions. Players have reported that during testing, these AI companions demonstrated impressive contextual awareness and responsiveness, executing commands ranging from taking cover to flanking enemies.

The voice assistant Jaspar goes beyond just narrating game details; he can adjust on-screen settings and provide tactical advice at a moment’s notice. Similarly, Pablo and Sofia have shown remarkable accuracy in following complex instructions, including solving in-game puzzles by positioning themselves strategically, all while handling accented speech with minimal lag.

Ubisoft has disclosed that Teammates operates on its Snowdrop engine, utilizing a blend of generative AI technologies to provide real-time interpretation of voice commands, tone, and context within the game. Although the project remains experimental, the company envisions it could be as groundbreaking for the industry as the transition from 2D to 3D graphics was in the past.

Currently, Teammates is in a closed testing phase, with a select group of players offering feedback that could influence its development. Ubisoft is also planning to release an informative video to share more about the project in the near future. As of now, however, there is no official release date for Teammates, leaving fans eagerly anticipating what lies ahead in this innovative gaming experiment.
