S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope has launched on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 on August 20, marking the first major story expansion for GSC Game World’s Heart of Chornobyl. Its arrival is accompanied by the free Update 2.0, which introduces one of the largest technical overhauls the base game has received since launch.
Cost of Hope runs alongside the events of the original campaign and once again puts players in control of Skif. This time, the story focuses on the long-running ideological divide between Duty and Freedom, two factions with opposing views on what should ultimately happen to the Zone.
Duty sees the Zone as a threat that must be contained and destroyed, while Freedom believes its phenomena should be studied and potentially used. Skif is drawn into the conflict as tensions between the two factions begin to undermine their fragile truce, with the previously inaccessible center of the Zone playing a key role in the new storyline.
GSC describes S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope as an expansion offering dozens of hours of additional gameplay. The DLC opens new areas for exploration, including the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and Iron Forest, with new hubs, quests, activities and secrets spread across the expanded map. Players also gain access to additional weapons and equipment.
The expansion arrives nearly two years after Heart of Chornobyl originally launched in November 2024. While the game drew praise for its atmosphere and uncompromising take on open-world survival, its release was also affected by performance issues and technical bugs. GSC has spent the period since launch delivering patches and broader gameplay improvements, with Update 2.0 representing the most substantial step in that process to date.
Update 2.0 is available to every owner of the base game without requiring the expansion. Heart of Chornobyl has moved to Unreal Engine 5.5.4, alongside changes to lighting, NPC and mutant behavior and the A-Life system. The update also introduces binoculars, additional weapons and optics, customizable difficulty settings and a fog system that can affect visibility and encounters in the Zone.
That makes August 20 more than a content drop for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. Cost of Hope expands the narrative and playable world while Update 2.0 addresses the underlying game that GSC has continued refining since its 2024 debut.
Cost of Hope is included with the Ultimate Edition of Heart of Chornobyl and is also available separately for $29.99/€29.99, subject to regional pricing. The base game is required to play the expansion.
