Although Grounded 2 isn’t excessively punishing, it doesn’t offer extensive guidance either. Players must explore and experiment to grasp its mechanics. Fortunately, the game features a comprehensive main questline that covers the essential elements, including how to upgrade your Omni-Tool. You’ll start searching for resources to unlock the Shovel and Hammer functions of the Omni-Tool almost immediately after entering the game, but there’s much more to discover with this multifunctional tool.
Below is a summary of the various functions and upgrades available for the Omni-Tool.
You receive the Axe upgrade free of charge upon claiming the Omni-Tool from the board at the Ranger Outpost: Snackbar. However, the additional features–Hammer, Shovel, and Wrench–require individual purchases. Once all functions are unlocked, you can enhance each one using Raw Science and other materials for increased effectiveness.
Currently, all four functions can be upgraded only to level two. Though the upgrade screen indicates potential enhancements up to level five, the materials needed for further progression remain unspecified, even after reaching level two. As Grounded 2 is still in early access, updates for upgrades beyond level two (tiers three, four, and five) are expected in future releases.

In Grounded 2, upgrading your Omni-Tool cannot be done on the fly or at the Workbench. Instead, you must go to the Comms Array section of a Ranger Post and interact with the Ranger Station.
Within the Ranger Station menu, select the Omni-Tool section to view the necessary upgrade requirements. These can also be checked via the crafting menu, but you can only perform the upgrade at the Ranger Station. If you have gathered the required materials, simply click the upgrade level and proceed with the upgrade.
The Omni-Tool in Grounded 2 provides much more variety than the gear typically available to novice players in survival games. It combines the functionalities of multiple tools, allowing you to manage without the need to carry separate axe, shovel, hammer, and wrench. When you use the Omni-Axe or any of the other functionalities, you simply approach the item to interact with it.
Additionally, the Omni-Tool does not take up an extra slot in your inventory, so you no longer have to decide between storing it or carrying it due to space constraints. However, it is not a weapon suitable for combat; players still need to seek out dedicated weapons for that purpose.
Obsidian Entertainment has unveiled an updated roadmap for Grounded 2, shedding light on upcoming features, which include tier three and tier four equipment upgrades.
As outlined by Obsidian, new tier three equipment and Omni-Tool upgrades are set to be released with the Winter update, which is anticipated between December 2025 and March 2026. Expect new tier four equipment and further Omni-Tool upgrades in the Summer 2026 update.
Unfortunately, there has yet to be a timeline provided for the release of tier five Omni-Tool upgrades. However, the roadmap does indicate that further enhancements for the Omni-Tool will be forthcoming after the Summer update in 2026.
