League of Legends is currently experimenting with WASD controls, offering veteran players a new method to navigate Summoner’s Rift while providing newcomers with a more accessible introduction to the intricacies of the MOBA genre.
League has seen its skill ceiling steadily increase in recent years, posing challenges for new players aiming to familiarize themselves with the game’s extensive roster of over 170 champions. Introducing WASD controls, which are familiar in many PC games, could ease the entry for players looking to dive into the experience, whether they are inspired by Arcane or exploring something fresh.
Release Date for WASD Controls in League of Legends
As of now, there is no specific release date for the WASD controls in League of Legends. However, the developers mentioned in a blog post that these controls will undergo an extended testing phase on the PBE across multiple patches to gather player feedback and resolve issues. Following the recent Patch 25.16, the WASD feature was not included in the PBE, but it is anticipated to launch on August 27, 2025, or in subsequent updates.
The team has requested players’ feedback during this testing period to help identify bugs and facilitate a smoother integration into non-ranked play. Once all concerns have been addressed, ranked and professional play will be enabled. The aim is to allow players to select the control scheme that feels most comfortable for them without providing an unfair competitive edge.
In addition to the WASD controls, several quality-of-life enhancements will also be introduced to the PBE, including a dynamic locked camera for improved visibility without completely unlocking, last-hit indicators in unranked matches to assist new players in honing their farming skills, and updated keybinding options that enable greater customization without altering system files.
The developers are also fine-tuning champions like Miss Fortune, Kalista, Graves, and a couple of others that pose balancing challenges with the WASD controls. Historically, point-and-click with the mouse has been the standard approach for most League players, and these innovations aim to refresh the game while making it more approachable for those accustomed to traditional PC gaming.
