Characters From Greek Myth
The sequel, Hades 2, developed by Supergiant Games, significantly builds on the mechanics introduced in the original Hades. While it may not dramatically increase the overall size of the game, it does greatly enhance the complexity and depth of gameplay.
Although the first installment established a successful formula, Hades 2 refines numerous aspects. Below is a summary of seven improvements that Hades 2 introduces compared to its predecessor, detailing gameplay expansions and system variations.
1
Increased Variety of Gods & Boons
Introduction of New Gods & More Regional NPCs Enhances Narrative & Bonus Prospects
In the initial Hades, players could choose Boons from nine deities, along with several special NPCs such as Sisyphus, Eurydice, and Patroclus, who offered similar enhancements. In Hades 2, this selection nearly doubles, with ten main Gods available to Melinoe, including newcomers like Hestia and Hephaestus. In addition, there are many more NPCs that can provide game-changing advantages.
This expansion is largely driven by the increased number of regions in Hades 2. As players explore eight diverse locations, they might encounter deities and mythological figures such as Arachne, Narcissus, Echo, Hades, Medea, Circe, Icarus, Athena, Dionysus, or Hermes, broadening the variety in gameplay. Additionally, the enhanced range of Boons available allows Melinoe far greater customization than Zagreus experienced.
2
Multiple Routes Available
Choose to Bring Down Chronos or Protect the Olympians
A significant advancement in Hades 2 is the introduction of multiple routes for Melinoe to explore. While Zagreus was confined to the Underworld and its four regions, Melinoe can choose between an Underworld pathway with entirely new areas and a Surface route aimed at confronting Chronos’ forces on Mount Olympus.
This option mitigates the potential repetitiveness that arises after multiple runs, as players can alternate routes to refresh their experience, once they unlock the ability to ascend from the Crossroads.
3
The Arcana System
Acquire & Equip Cards for Lasting Enhancements
The Mirror of Night from the first game allowed Zagreus to secure lasting advantages like Death Defiances and Boon rarity increases between runs. However, the mechanics of this system were rather straightforward, with players merely accumulating Shadow to gain abilities.
In contrast, the Arcana system in Hades 2 provides players with a more engaging experience with various challenges to consider before embarking on runs. The interactions between cards and the limitations of Melinoe’s Grasp create an engaging puzzle, which evolves as players unlock the capacity to equip additional Arcana Cards. This system proves considerably more enjoyable to experiment with than the previous model.
4
Greek Mythological Characters
Approximately 50% More Characters from Greek Mythology in Hades 2
The original Hades skillfully wove Greek mythological figures into its narrative. While the game included numerous references, Hades 2 amplifies this aspect by incorporating 50% more characters.
With just over 30 characters available for interaction in the first game, Hades 2 expands this to about 45, featuring many new figures. Though some liberties are taken with their portrayals, these characters largely reflect their original mythological stories, showcasing the depth of thought and design in their development.
5
Animal Companions
No Dog Pets, But Combat with Frogs Is Possible
In Hades, there was one animal companion, Cerberus, but he didn’t join Zagreus on quests, only allowing interaction through petting. In Hades 2, Melinoe can take one of five distinct Animal Familiars with her during her journeys. Each Familiar provides minor advantages tailored to various playstyles, but players must find these creatures on both routes and entice them to join by offering a Witch’s Delight.
6
Omega Moves
Hades 2 Doubles Melinoe’s Combat Maneuvers
A key enhancement in Hades 2 is the expanded combat variety. Zagreus had access to one type of Attack and Special depending on his weapon, as well as a Cast that launched projectiles. In Hades 2, Melinoe retains similar attack types, but her Cast evolves into a slowing circle.
Furthermore, holding down combat inputs charges an Omega Attack, introducing entirely new spells unique to each main input, which effectively doubles Melinoe’s combat options compared to Zagreus. This addition, along with the utilization of Magick as a resource, introduces an additional layer for players to manage during combat.
7
The Crossroads Hub
A Broader & More Engaging Hub Area
While the House of Hades in the first game was visually impressive, it lacked in size. The main area led to Hades’ chamber and Cerberus, with wings housing other characters and facilities. In comparison, the Crossroads in Hades 2 is significantly larger, providing Melinoe with numerous customization options.
Starting nearby her tent, players will find various areas, such as the List of Minor Prophecies, the Taverna, a Fishing Pier, the Cauldron for casting spells, and larger training grounds. After hiring Dora to redecorate the Crossroads area, players can further personalize the locations, making this hub experience richer and immersive compared to the previous game.
