Players can select from four new characters, each equipped with their unique skill trees and styles. Beyond combat, these characters engage in dialogue, share humor, and experience conflicts, enriching their personalities. Additionally, side characters receive more attention and development.

At the heart of the story lies the sinister Timekeeper, a tyrant controlling Kairos with an iron grip and a frightening implant embedded in your character’s brain, allowing him to track and manipulate you. This compelling plot device propels most of the core quest, as players team up with resistance fighters to defeat the Timekeeper’s subordinates and dismantle his oppressive rule. His presence significantly enhances the narrative and kept me thoroughly engaged.

The story is rife with betrayals, uneasy alliances, and a conclusion that compels players to reflect on the human consequences of power and retribution.

If you believed this franchise was solely about humor and loot, Borderlands 4 will change your perspective. While it retains its signature quirky moments (like Claptrap’s witty remarks, robotic allies, and oddly interactive weapons), the overarching narrative is notably darker.

The Timekeeper’s dominion over Kairos extends beyond mere physical control–his loyalists become mere puppets. Early on, you realize that the implant in your head serves not just as a tracker, but also as a constant threat to your freedom. With the aid of a small robot ally that disrupts the signal, you regain the autonomy to resist, yet the implant’s existence is a constant reminder that the struggle is as much internal as it is external.

Smooth, Fast-Paced, and Rewarding Gameplay

Where Borderlands 4 excels is in its combat and progression systems. The revamped weapon wheel eliminates the cumbersome tab cycling, allowing for seamless weapon changes during battles. This became crucial while facing the tech marauders and mutated beasts within Kairos.

Movement feels faster and more liberating, thanks to the grappling hook and dashes that offer a tactical advantage. The newly implemented «Repkits» provide on-the-spot healing and gear enhancements, mitigating some frustration during challenging boss fights, especially on higher difficulty levels. The Encore Machine system for resetting and farming bosses introduces fantastic replayability, ideal for those hunting rare gear.

However, I found the story’s pacing and scaling to be less impressive. The level system can be punishing for players who overlook side quests, leading to enemies becoming overpoweringly strong. While some side quests provide enjoyable mini-stories, others can feel like filler.

Despite the beauty of Borderlands 4, its ambition has led to some performance strains. PC players have reported frame rate drops and occasional glitches, which I experienced as well. I found it necessary to enable frame generation for a smoother gameplay experience, a feature that was unavailable on my system otherwise.
