The gaming community is in mourning following the death of Tomonobu Itagaki, a renowned figure in Japanese game development, who passed away on October 16, 2025, at the age of 58.
Itagaki was instrumental in defining the action and fighting game genres, leaving behind a legacy through acclaimed series like Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden. His demise was shared via a poignant message on his official Facebook page, prepared in advance and released by a close friend at the designated time.

Reflecting on his life’s journey, Itagaki stated, «My life has been a series of battles. I kept winning. I’ve caused a lot of trouble, too. I’m proud to say that I followed my beliefs and fought to the end. I have no regrets. However, I’m filled with regret that I wasn’t able to deliver a new work to all my fans. I’m sorry.»
His career began in 1992 when he joined Tecmo. By 1995, he had established Team Ninja, a studio that revolutionized 3D fighting games.
