Megabonk: Acquiring the Cursed Blade

New players embarking on their adventure in Megabonk will initially find themselves with a limited set of characters, weaponry, tomes, and inventory options. As they complete quests, they will accumulate Silver to acquire an array of new items.

Among the most challenging weapons to obtain in Megabonk is the Corrupted Sword, which offers distinct advantages that justify the effort required to unlock it. This guide will outline the steps necessary to acquire the Corrupted Sword.

Unlocking the Corrupted Sword in Megabonk

The Corrupted Sword is a melee weapon in Megabonk that attacks in the direction the player faces, including backwards. Its damage output increases when the player’s health is low.

To obtain the Corrupted Sword, players must upgrade the Cursed Tome to level 20 within 10 minutes. However, the Cursed Tome needs to be unlocked first before players can access it.

Unlocking the Cursed Tome in Megabonk

The Cursed Tome amplifies the difficulty of the ongoing game. To gain the Cursed Tome in Megabonk, players must defeat a Stage Boss within five minutes. This requires players to locate the boss and become sufficiently powerful to take it down swiftly.

Locating the Stage Boss may require some luck, as players might spawn nearby or on the opposite side of the map.

If players aim to traverse the map swiftly and have ample time to reach the boss, choosing a faster character like Tony McZoom or Calcium is advisable. Alternatively, stronger characters can be selected, capitalizing on their strengths, but this carries the risk of not reaching the boss in time. Choosing the Agility Tome can also help to boost movement speed around the map.

Once the Stage Boss is defeated within the five-minute limit, players can purchase the Cursed Tome from the Unlocks screen.

Strategies for Quick Upgrade of the Cursed Tome

Interestingly, acquiring the Cursed Tome is just the first step in unlocking the Corrupted Sword in Megabonk. Players must choose it during a run and manage to elevate it to Level 20 within 10 minutes–specifically, before the ultimate swarm of the initial stage.

This challenge arises from two factors: accessing the Cursed Tome early can be difficult, and leveling it presents its own complications since it might not always be available as an upgrade choice. Fortunately, there are several methods to enhance the likelihood of the Cursed Tome appearing as an upgrade option.

To maximize the chance of seeing the Cursed Tome on the upgrade menu, players should:

Turn Off Unnecessary Tomes and Items for This Run

The Cursed Tome will heighten the overall difficulty of the run. Thus, players need to be resilient enough to withstand the tougher enemies while simultaneously upgrading the Cursed Tome. To facilitate this, players should evaluate their assortment of tomes and weapons and identify which ones they do not wish to carry into the next run aimed at unlocking the Corrupted Sword.

Utilizing the Toggler shop upgrade, players can disable certain weapons, tomes, and items to prevent them from appearing in the selection screen. By decreasing the total number of available options, the chances of encountering the Cursed Tome increase. The sooner players unlock the Cursed Tome, the more chances they will have to level it up effectively.

Despite disabling certain tomes, the overall selection may still be too vast, making it difficult to grab the Cursed Tome early on. This is because the Toggler only affects purchased tomes, and many initial options remain available. Thankfully, there are additional strategies to help players frequently encounter the Cursed Tome:

Invest in Banish, Skip, and Refresh Upgrades

Players should gather Silver in Megabonk and invest in as many Banish, Skip, and Refresh upgrades from the shop as possible. These enhancements prevent players from being required to select items they don’t want.

Refresh allows players to change the available upgrade choices after leveling up, providing an additional opportunity to draw the Cursed Tome. The Skip function enables players to bypass an upgrade offer if none of the choices appeal to them. Lastly, Banish eliminates a current offer and ensures it won’t reappear for the remainder of that run, further increasing the chances of the Cursed Tome showing up in subsequent selections.

Select Needed Weapons and Tomes Promptly

<pWhen players finally gain access to the Cursed Tome, they should aim to fill the remaining weapon and tome slots early on. If they delay, new weapons and tomes will cycle in as players level up. By locking in their selections promptly, the remaining offers will consist solely of upgrades for their chosen items, thus enhancing the probability of the Cursed Tome being included.

Refund Extra Slots

In the shop, players have the option to refund previously purchased upgrades. They can buy two extra slots for weapons and tomes. However, refunding these upgrades simplifies players’ ability to raise the Cursed Tome’s level.

With three or four weapons and tomes, it takes additional levels to finalize selected items, which might slow down their focus on upgrading the Cursed Tome. Also, even with all slots filled from the start, players encounter a broader array of options in the upgrade selection screen throughout the game. Conversely, limiting to only two weapons and two tomes makes the Cursed Tome an upgrade option 75% of the time once preferred weapons and tomes are chosen.

Observe Upgrade Rarities

While leveling up the Cursed Tome, it is crucial to not only focus on upgrading but also on surviving waves of enemies. This can become challenging since the Cursed Tome raises the game’s difficulty.

To overcome this, players need to continually improve their arsenal while also leveling up the Cursed Tome. A handy trick involves remaining vigilant about upgrade rarities. If the Cursed Tome has a high rarity, it will significantly increase the difficulty. In such scenarios, players may prefer to upgrade a weapon or another tome instead to avoid exacerbating the challenge, ensuring their weapons effectively scale alongside their enemies and maintain survivability.

Players should exercise caution by avoiding Greed Shrines and refraining from picking the Skuleg item, as both of these will further elevate the difficulty, already exacerbated by the Cursed Tome. The Skuleg item can be disabled via the Toggler or permanently banished if it appears during gameplay.
