Palworld: A Guide to Enlisting Zoe

The recent update for Palworld, titled Tides of Terraria, primarily focused on content related to the Terraria crossover, featuring a new dungeon, various new Pals, and two additional bosses. However, this update also brought several other significant changes. Notably, it introduced a detailed mission system that allows players to gain rewards by assisting different NPCs on the islands. These rewards can vary from food items and Palspheres to various other useful tools, including the opportunity to recruit a new ally in one specific scenario.

One of the new recruits available in Palworld through the Tides of Terraria update is Zoe, along with her companion Grizzbolt. Although this addition was briefly mentioned in the patch notes, it’s worth noting that Zoe is the game’s first Tower Boss, presenting a considerable challenge with her Grizzbolt’s array of electrical attacks. Many of these attacks are area effect (AOE) attacks that can be difficult to dodge without precise timing and keen observation. Fortunately, as allies, both Zoe and Grizzbolt carry over many of these abilities to aid players in battles.

The recruitment missions associated with Zoe suggest that other Tower Bosses may also become recruitable in upcoming updates, though Zoe’s own recruitment process involves completing several tasks. It’s plausible that characters like Lily and Lyleen might be the next to become recruitable, although this remains speculative.

Step 1: Defeat Zoe at the Rayne Syndicate Tower

To start the process of recruiting Zoe, you will first need to defeat her at the Rayne Syndicate Tower. This encounter is part of the tutorial, so it should be straightforward. **You can find the Rayne Syndicate Tower at the location indicated on the map above**, and it’s advisable to be at level 20 or higher before attempting this fight, particularly if you’re going solo.

Zoe fights alongside Grizzbolt, executing a series of high-damage electric assaults, such as a homing ball of lightning and an AOE shockwave. Thankfully, Grizzbolt is particularly vulnerable to Ground-type attacks, so if you bring a Ground Pal or one with Ground abilities, the battle will be significantly easier. For example, you can easily catch Rushoar near the Tower, which makes for a solid selection against Zoe.

Step 2: Locate Zoe at the Desolate Church and Accept Her Quest

**After defeating Zoe**, you’ll need to track her down at the Desolate Church, which is highlighted on the map above. At this location, she will assign you a mission titled «Don’t Get Cocky.» To complete this task, you will need to interact with her while having a Grizzbolt as your active Pal. You can capture Grizzbolt at Wildlife Sanctuary #1, located in the southeast region of the map. Because that area is on an island, you’ll require a Pal that can swim or fly to get there safely.

Be aware that wandering into the Wildlife Sanctuary can result in conflict with PIDF troops, who will declare you a wanted individual and engage if they spot you. Once they notice you, they’re likely to pursue until they either take you down or are defeated. This, combined with the absence of fast travel options in Wildlife Sanctuaries, calls for adequate preparation before you set out to find Grizzbolt.

Returning to Zoe with Grizzbolt will prompt a surprise reaction from her, leading her to begrudgingly acknowledge her respect for your efforts. Completing this mission will also reward you with a substantial amount of XP, so it’s a good idea to bring lower-level Pals to help them gain experience.

Step 3: Challenge the Free Pal Alliance

**For her next request**, Zoe requires you to eliminate some members of the Free Pal Alliance. Conveniently, they frequent the area north of the Desolate Church, making them relatively easy to locate. We recommend proceeding to the northwest until you reach the Bridge of the Twin Knights, and then heading due north; this area is filled with Free Pal Alliance members and their camps.

To successfully complete this part of Zoe’s quest, you must eliminate five members of the Free Pal Alliance, either by defeating them or capturing them. At this level, you should find defeating them manageable. A Pal at level 20 or higher with a good attack should make quick work of them. As with previous missions, this task offers a generous amount of XP, providing a good opportunity to level up your Pals.

Step 4: Retrieve Zoe’s Memento

**After you’ve proven your worth against the Free Pal Alliance,** Zoe will trust you with a personal favor. She’ll ask you to locate a cherished memento at nearby ruins. If you track the mission in your menu, it will guide you to the right location, specifically to the Fort Ruins. You’ll be on the lookout for a worn blanket lying on the ground within the ruins, which aligns with the story Zoe shared when you began the mission.

Bringing this memento back to Zoe will lead her to join your team, allowing her to accompany you on your journey. Interestingly, even after recruiting her, she continues to appear as an NPC at the Desolate Church, likely to prevent complications in multiplayer settings.

How Do Allies Work in Palworld?

Currently, Zoe is the only recruitable ally in the game, though it’s reasonable to anticipate that more Tower Bosses may become available in future updates. When Zoe and Grizzbolt join you, they function similarly to a Pal, allowing you to summon and dismiss them, though they cannot be active alongside other Pals. You can issue commands to them and assign them to your Base, enabling them to perform various tasks just like a typical Grizzbolt would.

Aside from Zoe riding on Grizzbolt’s back, his stats and work abilities remain unchanged. However, unlike standard Grizzbolts, this one begins with the Electric Ball attack, enabling it to launch a homing electrical projectile. This move, also utilized during the boss battle, boasts excellent targeting accuracy due to its homing capabilities.
