Former Fnatic mid-laner, Nemesis, has expressed concerns about what he perceives as a pressing problem affecting League of Legends tournaments in 2025: a stagnant and overly uniform meta that stifles creative build options and discourages risk-taking in higher levels of play.

«I wouldn’t say the game is overly balanced, but it is certainly lacking excitement–items are too simplified, runes have not undergone significant updates in a long time, objectives feel repetitive, and patches hardly change anything at high MMR,» Nemesis stated on X (previously Twitter), in response to Midbeast’s commentary about the meta’s excessive balance.

The meta of League has witnessed considerable changes over the years, but esports players often find themselves resorting to meta champions. Striving for game balance has historically resulted in certain champions being stronger than others; however, developers seem to have achieved a stable balance, yet many players are dissatisfied with the increasing dullness of the game.

While the issue of champion repetitiveness has been somewhat mitigated by Fearless Drafts in 2025, professional players still encounter the same champions in solo queue, leading to a lack of innovative builds. Although MSI 2025 showcased several unique champion selections, players are eager for developers to implement substantial revisions to runes and objectives to invigorate the meta.

Riot Games has acknowledged the current situation, with lead gameplay designer Matt «Phroxzon» Leung-Harrison recognizing the unintended results of an overly optimized meta. Despite their efforts to balance champions fairly, it appears that the imperfections of a skewed meta were what made League enjoyable for many players.

Renowned mid-laner Faker, along with other professional competitors at EWC 2025, has also called for transformative changes to the meta, advocating for greater player agency and numerous other modifications. The pressure is now on Riot, and with increasing demand from both the community and high-level professionals, all attention is focused on whether the developers will make significant adjustments or maintain the status quo.

Currently, Nemesis is competing with the Los Ratones roster in the NLC, alongside several prominent esports veterans, including Rekkles.
