Wuchang: Fallen Feathers features a noticeably slower gameplay style compared to other Soulslike titles, with the combat speed largely influenced by the type of weapon equipped. Heavier weapons may have lengthier attack animations but do not impact the character’s dodging speed.
Dodging is presented as the primary method to evade damage, requiring players to correctly time their movements and position themselves effectively. While dodging is generally more advantageous, players also have the capability to block right from the start of the game. Below are instructions on how to block and its functions.
How to Block & Deflect (Parry) in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers
How to Block
An important aspect of blocking that players may not fully grasp is that blocking is only achievable with an Axe. Axes are among the heftier weapon choices, characterized by a slow attack speed and elevated damage. The Block Skill, which is the initial skill available in the Axe skill tree, is accessible right at the beginning of the game. Players can block by holding the following buttons while wielding an Axe:
- PlayStation – L2
- PC – Shift + Right Click
- Xbox – LT
Players can maintain the block for as long as necessary, absorbing as many hits as desired. While blocking, players can immediately transition to dodging or attacking by pressing the respective button. Additionally, Wuchang can move slowly while blocking, allowing for strategic maneuvers without being confined to a single animation.
The weapon’s class is displayed next to its name in the Weapons menu.
How to Deflect (Parry)
Deflecting employs the same buttons as blocking but requires a weapon designed for this purpose, like longswords. While it is possible to block damage by holding the deflect button, timing your deflect with the enemy’s attack allows players to negate most of the damage and prepare for a counter-attack. Although deflecting takes more precision, it provides greater tactical options than simple blocking.
Evaluating Blocking in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers
Although blocking is primarily associated with Axes, it is not advisable to rely on it heavily due to insufficient damage reduction. This method typically mitigates only about fifty percent of incoming damage, and any status effects from an attack still begin to accumulate against the player. Dodging, while more challenging, fully avoids damage and can also recharge spells if executed accurately.
Additionally, many enemy and boss attacks are unblockable, making dodging essential to avoid confusion about potential responses. Given the faster attack speeds of adversaries in the game, dodging can also help players capitalize on openings created by the enemy’s missed attacks.
Understanding Clashes in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers
Clashes are not dependent on any specific discipline and can occur when two weapons collide during combat. In such instances, both attacks can go through while some damage is negated. Certain discipline skills that incorporate «Clash» in their names enhance this mechanic, allowing players to absorb full damage during successful clashes.
