Top Promises to Keep in Crusader Kings 3 Coronations DLC

The Coronations expansion for Crusader Kings 3 introduces a feature for newly anointed monarchs to take an Oath upon completion of their Coronation ceremony. A variety of Oaths are available, each requiring the ruler to achieve specific goals within a set timeframe to unlock thematic rewards. Failing to uphold these Oaths within the designated period can result in significant penalties to the ruler’s Legitimacy, Prestige, Stress levels, and the perceptions of their vassals.

Considering the rewards at stake and the potential risk to their Legitimacy–which could ultimately jeopardize their reign–players may want to identify the most manageable Oaths to fulfill during their Coronation in CK3.

Not every Oath will be available to all players; some depend on specific conditions being met. For instance, the Secure Alliances Oath can only be sworn by those who have one or fewer allies, as otherwise establishing alliances wouldn’t be a necessary focus for that ruler.

The Most Manageable Oaths in Crusader Kings 3’s Coronations

The following Oaths represent the most achievable for the majority of players. As they currently stand, these Oaths have objectives that can be realistically completed within the given timeframe. Although other Oaths are not impossible to fulfill, they tend to be more challenging or situational.

Secure Alliances

‘Secured Alliances’ Modifier

Have 1 or fewer allies

  • Form 5 alliances with +50 opinions
  • One of the following:
  1. One is one tier below
  2. One is the same tier
  3. One is one tier above

20 Years

  • Legitimacy
  • Prestige
  • Opinions from allies
  • +1 Diplomacy
  • +10 Acceptance for Allied Marriages

Completing the Secure Alliances Oath is relatively straightforward, particularly for rulers focused on Diplomacy and equipped with strong Diplomacy Perks in CK3. However, the stipulation that one ally must be at least one tier below can pose a challenge for Emperors, as they will need to form alliances with rulers of King-tier or lower.

Ensure Peace

‘Peace Ensured’ Modifier

Less than 1 year of peace

50 Years

  • Legitimacy
  • Prestige
  • Development
  • +1 Domain Limit
  • +0.1 Monthly Control
  • +10 Popular Opinion

Achieving the Ensure Peace Oath is also not particularly difficult since players only need to secure 5 years of peace within 50 years. Avoiding war is relatively easy, especially if vassals are content. However, this Oath is seldom presented, as the realm must have been engaged in war within the last year prior to the coronation, making it illogical to claim peace in a tranquil kingdom.

Expand The Realm

‘Expanded the Realm’ Modifier

None

  • Increase the realm size by 1.3x

20 years

  • Legitimacy
  • Prestige
  • Buffs to capital
  • +1 Martial
  • +15% Legitimacy Gain
  • +10 opinions from Glory Hound & Belligerent vassals

Since many players aim to expand their dominion in Crusader Kings 3, this Oath aligns well with ambitious expansion plans, allowing for territorial gains without the necessity of war. However, it can prove challenging for those who start as larger realms, like the Holy Roman Empire, where achieving a 1.3x growth may be steep. On the other hand, smaller kingdoms, such as Bohemia, may only need to enlarge their realm from, say, 14 to 19.

Shape The Realm

‘Shaped the Realm’ Modifier

None

  • Build or upgrade at least 10 structures

15 years

  • New holdings gain free buildings
  • +1 Stewardship
  • -25% Holding Construction Time & Cost

The Shape the Realm Oath can be tough during the early game, but with a considerable amount of Gold and a focus on Stewardship, it becomes much more feasible. Given the urgency of only 15 years to complete the objective, players should aim to construct multiple buildings simultaneously across various holdings. Upgrades also count, and some can be executed quite quickly and affordably.

Opting Out of an Oath

Players also have the option to choose to take No Oath, which is a perfectly valid route. Oaths can prove demanding and feel constrictive on gameplay. The No Oath decision is ideal for:

  • Rulers in precarious situations, such as facing civil strife or financial issues.
  • Players preferring to explore the game’s dynamics freely.
  • Those focusing on various aspects of governance.
  • New players of CK3 who have more complex mechanics to familiarize themselves with.

The community of Crusader Kings 3 has expressed concerns about the difficulty of Oath objectives being overly challenging and restrictive, indicating potential patches for future adjustments that may lessen the difficulty of other Oaths not mentioned here, as well as fixing bugs preventing certain Oaths from being completed successfully.
